About Decatur Township
The Decatur Township Fire Department (DTFD) is located in the southwest corner of Indianapolis, Marion County. Decatur Township is a mixture of rural and urban settings otherwise sometimes known as a ‘bedroom community’ consisting of 33 square miles. Decatur Township is the home of approximately 35,000 people and several thousand additional commuters’ during their travels to and from work. Decatur Township also has stretches of critical state infra-structure consisting of Interstate I-70 and Interstate I-465 which are two heavily traveled interstates through Indianapolis. Decatur Township also has a 6-mile stretch of State Road 67 which is also a heavily traveled through-way giving the public access to the southern portion of the state by both vehicle and railway.
Founded in 1948 by a set of dedicated volunteer members, Decatur Township Fire Department has developed into a career department with 70 full-time firefighters and 9 civilian paramedics. The department currently consists of a Fire Chief, Deputy Chief of Administration, Deputy Chief of Operations, Division Chief of Training and Safety, Division Chief of EMS, a Facilities/Logistics Coordinator, and a Risk Mitigation and Public Information Coordinator. The department currently staffs (3) fire stations consisting of (3) engines, (1) ladder, (3) ambulances, (1) tanker, (2) support vehicles and a Battalion Chief. DTFD also offers Advanced Life Support (ALS) to the community by staffing paramedics on the engines and ambulances. Decatur Township was dispatched on 8,167 runs in 2022 and has a Class 2 ISO rating.
